My name is Elaine Carder and I founded Until I Get Home in January 2019. I have been married to Kenny for thirty years in May 2019 and a military wife for most of that time. We had two sons during our thirty years of service and endured five deployments.
I started crocheting several weeks prior to starting Until I Get Home. As I planned for my next project, my cousin suggested I make a baby blanket and donate it to a local cause. My husband suggested that I make hats and scarves for organizations that would send them to deployed service members. I put the two suggestions together and decided to start my own mission.
You see, my husband was deployed while I was pregnant with our first son. At that time we corresponded via snail mail and an occasional phone call. There was not internet or Skype. No cell phones. The phone calls were far and few between. I spent hours upon hours watching tv in hopes of seeing his face, even if for only a second.
On February 14, 1991, I received a package. I had not heard my husband’s voice nor seen his handwriting on an envelope since before Christmas. In that box was a red hand knitted tiny sweater. It was the itchiest little sweater ever and so incredibly beautiful! Our son was born on April 2, 1991. His father held him for the first time six weeks later.
My husband may have missed the birth of our first son, but that little red sweater is a reminder that he was thinking of him and loved him very much.
This is why I started Until I Get Home.
